If your Austin home or business should experience a flood, or any type of water damage, your first instinct may be to let everything dry out before you start to clean up. While water evaporation is a natural process, you may think that this is the route to go. While we may air dry our clothes on a clothesline, this isn’t advisable for your home, once water damage occurs. In fact, air-drying out your home can cause a multitude of damaging issues, such as warping and mold.

Here are two main reasons why air drying your Austin home is not the best route to go after water damage has occurred:

Water Damage to Your Austin Property

While air drying usually takes longer than proper cleaning, you run the risk of having many items in your house becoming water damaged. Carpets, wallpaper, upholstery are considered absorbent, so once they become waterlogged, it will take longer to dry than usual. Warping can then occur, once these porous materials absorb the water. Think of walls and floors submerged under water…they almost always are never the same afterwards.

If your property is exposed to moisture for an extended period of time, oxidation and rotting can also take place. A thorough drying procedure should be taken into account to prevent any type of warping, which is why it’s best to remove all of the water from your Austin home and then begin the cleaning process. Once your property is severely water damaged, it may be very costly to repair and even replace what’s been affected.

The Appearance of Mold after Water Damage

The longer that water remains in your Austin home or business after water damage, the greater the opportunity for mold to appear. This is why it’s important to remove all water and not air-dry your home. If you move quickly to remove the water from your home, then there will be a reduced opportunity for mold to spread into your floors and walls. Tiny crevices can allow mold spores to fester and take root, and you most likely don’t want to have to replace your floors and walls. Mold removal and remediation should take place as quickly as possible, to stop mold before it starts.
